The Governance and Legal Services Department covers a wide range of services and functions of the University including general commercial advice, intellectual property, company matters, statutory compliance, risk management, student complaints and information governance.
The Role
The purpose of the job is to provide legal advice, support and leadership in respect of a wide range of complex legal and compliance issues in consultation with or under the direction of the University Solicitor and the Assistant Solicitor as required. The Governance and Legal Services Manager will review research and consultancy agreements and agreements for the purchase of goods or services regularly.
It is also responsibility of the post holder to assist the Assistant University Secretary in ensuring compliance with the University’s information governance responsibilities, including those concerned with data protection but in particular, freedom of information.
After an initial period of induction, the post holder will lead in ensuring continued compliance with freedom of information requirements. The role is to provide professional support in developing and maintaining policies, procedures, processes and controls to ensure continued compliance in this area.
The Person
You will have a professional legal qualification – either a solicitor or barrister – and are qualified to practise in England and Wales. You will have honours degree or an equivalent relevant qualification and will have experience of working in a legal environment. You will have knowledge and understanding of Freedom of Information and Data Protection legislation together with demonstrable experience of ensuring compliance in these areas.
The post holder will need to be flexible and prioritise time according to the needs of stakeholders at the time, and fully appreciate the need for discretion and confidentiality, whilst meeting the broader requirements of the Governance and Legal Services department.
