Kent, Surrey and Sussex Community Rehabilitation Company (KSS CRC) deliver a range of rehabilitation services to people who have been sentenced by a court to either custody or community supervision and who are classed as low to medium risk. We are here to reduce re-offending and help keep safe the communities in which we operate. The role of Probation Service Officer (PSO) is to contribute to the effective management of Service Users in order to protect the public and reduce re-offending.
As a PSO working in the resettlement team you’ll be rehabilitating service users through their prison sentence and on release in the community. You’ll be working as part of a team, in and outside of prisons to assess service users risks and needs and engage with them to help them address their behaviour so they can aspire, achieve and make sustainable changes to their lives. You will need to use your excellent communication and negotiation skills to secure the services the service users need. You will also use your experience of engaging with people to motive and challenge them.
In this role you’ll be at the forefront of new and fresh ways of working with short and long term sentenced prisoners. This is an incredibly rewarding and fulfilling role that frequently witnesses’ service users learn and change through their work with our teams. You will be expected to achieve performance targets and ensure delivery of high quality work.
Key Responsibilities:
You will be responsible for the management and supervision of individuals subject to Community Orders and Licences in accordance with national requirements.
Contribute to the delivery of KSS CRC’s Through the Gate service in prisons across the region.
Preparing breach reports, written submissions in relation to case management, assessing individual risk and taking full account of victims and the safeguarding of children and vulnerable adults.
You will formulate sentence plans that address service users risks and needs in accordance with sentence requirements and resource availability.
You will have to establish and maintain effective liaison with intervention providers and external agencies to design and promote, refer to and deliver a range of services for service users to address criminogenic factors, e.g. training and employment, accommodation and substance misuse.
You will support Service Users to comply with orders and licences, taking enforcement action where necessary. You will have to demonstrate pro-social modelling skills by consistently reinforcing pro-social behaviour and attitudes and by challenging those which are anti-social.
The role involves undertaking a final evaluation on completion of supervision, with reference to the effectiveness of specific interventions and steps to reinforce community re-integration.
The ideal candidate will be:
Able to maintain clear, comprehensive and accurate case records
Experienced in using statistical information
Flexible – willing to travel throughout KSS CRC and undertake some evening work
Willing to work towards NVQ Level 3 in Criminal Justice.
Skills and Experience:
The successful candidate will need to have:
Good knowledge and experience of the work of the Criminal Justice System.
Experience of working with a variety of people who have experienced a range of social/personal difficulties.
Ability to motivate others and facilitate learning in order to change attitudes and behaviour.
Ability to plan and conduct structured meetings with individuals or groups.
Ability to exercise authority and reinforce boundaries in an appropriate manner.
Excellent communication skills with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
The Ideal candidate will be competent in:
Working as part of a team, able to achieve individual and team targets
Administration and data entry skills with a high regard to speed and accuracy
Organisational skills and working to deadlines
Dealing with information on a confidential basis.
Ensuring compliance with appropriate legislation and standards are met.
