Are you an IT “geek” looking to develop a wide range of IT skills to support a small business? In this role, you will learn skills from local PC support, to servers and wide area communications networks, as well as the software side with systems design and development – this job will really cover it all.

The company operates a number of remote sites – the Head Office in Maidstone, Kent is the centre of our administrative operations and this is linked to several remote sites in the UK and France. Although we are a small business, we try to employ “big company” technology – both the Directors are advocates of technology in general and believe in the maximum use of IT in all aspects of the business. Our systems include PC hardware with Windows 10 OS and Microsoft Office 2013, LAN (local area networks) and WAN (wide area networks), VPN and other remote access, Microsoft Windows Server with Exchange, in-house built VoIP server (voice over IP telephony) using FreePBX and Asterisk on a Linux platform, local and cloud based application software to support various business processes including a bespoke online reservation and business management system and various web sites. Support of all our technology is currently provided by the Directors who, although self-taught, have a broad technical understanding of all areas and have developed all our systems in-house.

The IT Support Technician apprentice will be sponsored by the Company, under the government’s apprenticeship scheme, to train to Level 4 Diploma in Information Technology. The apprenticeship will involve a structured course of study, based around the workplace and gradually learning the job itself in a hands-on way through workplace training, home study and day release workshops over a period of two years. Over the course of the apprenticeship, the person will be supported as much as necessary by our Directors and coached into the role, taking on the individual tasks and learning the technical skills gradually to be able to develop into a highly skilled IT generalist.

The Job

The apprenticeship will start in the Autumn 2017 and from day 1 you will be expected to make a contribution to the role – in terms of the job, this is likely to be more systems design and development led in the early days giving you the opportunity to analyse business functions which need to be automated and to develop systems to support that. You will gradually learn the business systems from a technical view point as each and every issue occurs – and your role will ultimately include:

• PC and network support and troubleshooting
• Windows Server and network administration
• WAN, VPN and data communications support
• VoIP server and network support, system configuration and user management
• Systems administration – maintaining records of equipment, logins and system resources
• Procedures and systems documentation
• Managing and supporting cloud based applications
• Website development and technical support
• Local systems design and development (such as Access databases)
• IT strategy and planning to keep us at the leading edge of technology

The Candidate

The successful candidates will be based at the Company’s Head Office in Maidstone, Kent but must be prepared to travel as necessary for the proper fulfilment of the role, including attending all training events in proper completion of the course and spending periods abroad in resort as necessary.

We are expecting this role to be attractive to a post “A” level school or college leaver who satisfies the skills and qualifications requirements below – however, applications are equally open to older or experienced candidates who are looking for a change of career and the opportunity to train for formal qualifications alongside a job. All applicants must satisfy the requirements of the government apprenticeship scheme.

Skills and Qualifications Required

• You must have achieved at least 5 subjects in GCSE Grades A to C and have at least Grade 5 or “C” at GCSE Maths and English or equivalent.
• A or AS level ICT or Computer Science or an ICT related college course
• Strong interest in IT systems at all levels – covering a range of interests from hardware technical issues to web based application development
• Strong numeric skills – logical thinker – high levels of accuracy and attention to details
• Commitment to personal development to become an integral part of the business at the end of the apprenticeship

The Benefits

• Starting basic apprenticeship salary £10,000 plus guaranteed increases at each completed stage of training
• 40 hours per week during the apprenticeship
• 28 days paid holiday per annum, including the UK public holidays
• Formal training to work towards the Level 4 NVQ Information Technology – one day per week of your working time will be allowed for study and you will also need to invest some of your own time to achieve your study goals
• All training costs will be paid by the Government or by the Company – there are no costs to the candidate
• Annual ski holiday and educational trip to the Alps at the end of the ski season
