Waste Operative with Prison Cleanance Rochester

SECURITY CONSCIOUS
Waste/ Recycling Operative
HMP Establishment in Rochester, 3 month initial Contract, likely to be extended further.
Based on a minimum of 37 hours per week. Mon -Thurs 7am - 4pm & Friday 7am - 12/ midday (flexible) Plus Ever other Saturday and Sunday Morning.
£8.41 per hour PAYE inclusive of holiday pay

Overview of the position:
As the sole agency supplier to the HM Prison Service for the provision of maintenance trades & support operatives, Hays is seeking to recruit a waste/ recycling operative for Rochester Prison in Rochester, Kent.
This is an initial 3 month Temporary Contract, starting ASAP with a starting pay rate of £8.41 per hour inclusive of holiday pay.
Based on a minimum of 37 hours per week, Mon -Thurs 7am - 4pm & Friday 7am - 12/ midday (flexible). Plus every other Saturday & Sunday Mornings.
The waste/ recycling operative role is in a unique working environment with a strong sense of team working. Always in demand, you could benefit from long-term contracts and there is also potential, once trained, to work in other prisons both locally and nationally.
You must be local to the prison or have your own transport. Basic Uniform will need to be provided by the temporary worker in most establishments, the Prison/ Contractors will supply high visibility clothing and protective headwear, along with any other specialist safety equipment if required.

Purpose of the Waste/ Recycling role:
As part of the Facilities & Waste Disposal team you will be responsible for maintaining the general cleanliness, waste and recycling of the prison, including prisoner areas, staff and admin areas.
You will also be responsible for assisting in the safety and security of the establishment where your duties could also include escorting visitors & building contractors within the prison and outside areas.
There will also be contact with serving prisoners, supervising them whilst carrying out the waste and recycling tasks ie general rubbish clearance and undertake quality control over their work.

* Collect, process and dispose of waste materials from all areas of the establishment in the most appropriate and effective way, with regard to legislative compliance and environmental issues
* Liaise with contractors when ordering services, including skip collection
* Provide general advice and guidance to staff on how to manage waste more effectively and actively promote recycling within the establishment
* Carry out insect control measures within work area
* Actively contribute to recycling / waste efficiency meetings and Sustainable Development Committee Meetings
* Supervise prisoners parties and undertake quality control over their work
* Log materials used and assist with stocktaking of tools, equipment and materials
* Undertake activities in such a way to ensure that waste is reduced and that areas of work are safe, clean and tidy whilst work is in progress
* Inform manager to ensure sufficient levels of stock are maintained
* Ensure allocated Planned Maintenance and small repairs are carried out, undertaking service requests raised via the computer aided facilities management system
* Carry out project work when required
* Advise on sufficient levels of stock and request procurement of goods and services and ensure all materials used are logged and are fit for purpose
* Escort technical contractors when required, working with and supervising them in accordance with Local Security Strategy (LSS)
* Maintain regular communications via radio net in accordance with(LSS)
* Undertake the role of banksman directing the operation of some plant equipment or machinery
* Be responsible for tools and plant machinery, carrying out checks at regular intervals and completing relevant documentation in accordance with Local Security Strategy (LSS) and National Security Framework (NSF)
* Comply with Health & Safety policies, procedures and legislation to ensure

Kent Prisons have an excellent reputation as busy local prisons, which serve all the courts in the South East. They pride themselves in engaging and involving employees working alongside them in the process of change. Experience: Previous waste & recycling experience is required for this role. The nature of the role requires candidates to be security conscious and able to challenge potential compromises and risks, you will also need to be reliable and consistent, level headed and have exceptional interpersonal skills.

Successful applicants will have a background in cleaning, and will be assessed based on the following competencies: Acting with integrity, respecting others, Building relationships and team working, communicating effectively, developing self and others.

Security Clearance required: All applicants will be subject to the HM Prison Service Security Clearance procedure which can take up to 4 weeks, this will include a Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) check. You must hold a Valid Passport or Birth Certificate & Photo Driving Licence in your current address. All applicants must be able to provide details of 2 satisfactory references, at least one from an ex-employer.
