This is an exciting opportunity to become our Head of Operations and Facilities and take responsibility for the management and operation of Kent Sport’s outstanding range of facilities. This includes three large sports halls, an extensive outdoor sporting complex with Astro and 3G pitches, cycle hub, new indoor tennis and events arena, squash courts, two fitness studios, various fitness suites and a physiotherapy clinic.

As a member of the Senior Management Team, you will deliver operational excellence, motivate, lead, and support your team and ensure the highest levels of health and safety are maintained. It will be essential for you to build and maintain key internal and external relations.

Kent Sport is an exciting and friendly place to work, situated on the beautiful University of Kent, Canterbury campus. We have some of the highest-quality fitness facilities in the country which are available to all members including students, staff, alumni, and members of the public. We have a dedicated Sports Development team, fully qualified Health and Fitness instructors and support staff – the department offers a wide range of services and caters for over 50 different activities. We also cater for conferences, exhibitions, sporting events and shows.

Key accountabilities include:

Health and safety – writing and reviewing departmental policies and procedures, attendance at meetings and ensuring Kent Sport risk assessments are up to date and meeting legal requirements

Facility maintenance and improvements – regularly assess and grade Kent Sport facilities and plan an appropriate yearly maintenance programme. Keep an up to date rolling maintenance programme

Large event management – liaison with clients covering all aspects of the event including risk assessment review

Space allocation and utilisation – ensuring a balance between student, staff, and commercial usage of all facilities

Development and maintenance of beneficial internal and external relationships.

To be successful in this role you will need:

Considerable proven experience of facility management, development, and operations

Experience of working on refurbishments and capital projects from design concept to build and delivery across multiple sites and managing a refurbishment and maintenance budget

Experience of managing health and safety requirements with a knowledge of current practices

Outstanding management skills with the ability to lead and manage staff effectively, creating an environment where staff are motivated and supported to meet individual and organisational goals.

Kent Sport has grown significantly as a department in recent years both in terms of its staffing structure, but also the facilities and services available to its members. The department provides facilities and a diverse health, fitness & sporting programme to nearly 20,000 students, 3,000 staff and the community across our campuses. It is a sporting hub for the county.

The responsibilities of Kent Sport are many and varied from playing a vital strategic role within the University to building strong relationships with National Governing Bodies, County & local councils as well as local sports clubs and organisations.
