Red Eagle Recruitment are looking to recruit a a Laboratory Technician for our client based in Tonbridge. This position would ideally suit a graduate with a recent Degree in Biochemistry, or a school leaver with a keen interest in Science looking for their first opportunity. Purpose of the Position
The laboratory technician is responsible for Managing the Lab and carrying out Quality testing’s both online testing, raw material testing and product release testing.
You will report to the Quality Manager and you are responsible for collecting, analyse raw material and finished product samples against specification and in some cases to collect/log data e.g. Moisture content of raw materials or Data for Statistical Process Control. You will analyse both food and non-food materials to ensure good quality and specification are met. You will Supports Quality Manager and production team by managing Lab analysis and updating production team on analysis so relevant changes can be made.
Qualifications and training required
Both university graduates and school leavers can become lab technicians. Graduates will need a degree in a relevant scientific subject such as biology, biochemistry, chemistry or physics. They will typically start off as a laboratory technician and work their way up to a more senior research and development role.
A school leaver can apply for an apprenticeship or an entry-level role. Typically, you’ll need GCSEs or Standard Grades and you might also need A levels or Scottish Highers, including a scientific subject. With experience, a school leaver could progress to this.
Main Responsibilities and Description of Duties.
Your responsibilities will include:
Conducting and supporting scientific investigations and experiments
Raw material and finished product testing
Recording and analysing data from production operation (e.g. Statistical Process Control)
Online testing of product and advice production if any issue is found
Planning, setting up and undertaking controlled experiments and trials
Writing Standard Operating Procedures for Lab and non-Lab areas
Collecting, preparing and/or testing samples
Maintaining, calibrating, cleaning and testing sterility of the equipment
Providing technical support to Production team and customers
Registration of samples in our quality system (Pass-Fail) both when they are analysed and when they are released.
Analysis and release of final materials produced in the production plant.
Liaise with operators and Quality Manager if any deviation appears.
Creates and sends certificates of conformance to customers.
Helps with special projects related to Quality and any other areas where his/her help can be provided.
Keeps laboratory supplies ready by inventorying stock; placing orders; verifying receipt.
Keeps equipment operating by following operating instructions; troubleshooting breakdowns; maintaining supplies; performing preventive maintenance; calling for repairs.
Documents information by maintaining daily logs and equipment record books.
Resolves problems by examining and evaluating data; selecting corrective steps.
Proposes ideas of improvement and help with the implementation in order to achieve the Quality System goals.
Presenting results to senior staff and customers
Writing reports, reviews and summaries
Carrying out quality visual checks within the Factory
Ordering and maintaining stock and resources for Lab use
Implementing micro schedule by collecting and sending out micro samples to external Lab

The laboratory Technician is responsible for:
Making sure the materials produced are analysed according to the methods and specifications. When any deviation appears, inform the Quality or Plant Manager in order to initiate a corrective action. Running the laboratory on a daily basis in terms of stock and paperwork is also an important part of the role. You are key part of the HACCP team and will play a key role in investigating non-conformance, complaints, quarantine and product recall.
