JOB OUTLINE

Open School East (OSE) is seeking to recruit a Head of Young Associates Programme to continue developing and fully implement Open School East’s new, free, accredited (Level 1) arts and design programme for young people aged 16-18. The Young Associates Programme (YAP) is due to launch in autumn 2019 and will be piloted through a smaller programme with the same age group, between April and June 2019.

The successful candidate will continue the research and work started by the YAP Assistant and OSE team over the past year. For the first six months, s/he/they will firm up the partnership with the accrediting centre, build additional partnerships with local providers and facilities, develop a recruitment strategy for the Young Associates, manage the recruitment of the faculty, deliver the pilot programme, and input in and finalise the curriculum for the fully-fledged programme. When YAP launches in the autumn, they will be responsible for delivering, adapting and evaluating the programme, with the support of OSE’s Activities & Events Manager. They will also work closely with a Quality Assurance Manager and will report to the Director.

ABOUT OPEN SCHOOL EAST

Established in 2013, Open School East (OSE) is a Margate-based arts charity that delivers free and flexible interactive learning programmes with and for communities less likely to access traditional provision. We have so far been running two complementary strands:

A free, year-long development programme for emerging artists and cultural practitioners – the Associates Programme;
A multifaceted programme of events, activities and courses, free of charge and open to all.
In autumn 2019, we will launch the Young Associates Programme.
As an organisation committed to alternative provision, we strive to run our programmes according to principles of collaboration, experimentation and inclusivity, and welcome those who engage with these notions in different ways.

ABOUT THE YOUNG ASSOCIATES PROGRAMME

The Young Associates Programme (YAP) is the natural continuation of OSE’s commitment to increasing equality of access to education and to making the arts a more open sector. Through the YAP, we seek to create a free high-quality pathway for local young people with creative aspirations, towards a creative career and/or higher education. We aim to work more specifically with young people from disadvantaged households as well as those who have experienced academic difficulty and/or disenfranchisement from mainstream education.

The Young Associates Programme will be a place for young people aged 16-18 to develop life skills, confidence, and knowledge and techniques in the a range of art and design forms, as well as to interact with art, design and industry professionals.

The Young Associates will achieve a Level 1 through a 3-day a week programme, which will include:

- Guided learning;
- Functional skills learning (English, Maths, ICT and presentation skills);
- Mentorship, pastoral and career development advice;
- Independent work and research;
- Project delivery (e.g. showcase or event);
- In addition, the Young Associates will be invited to join the skills-based workshops and seminars offered as part of our Public Programme, alongside the learning provided by our yearly artists’ commission.

The Young Associates Programme will be open, by straightforward application, to young people across East Kent who show talent and interest in creative activities, but haven’t necessarily been given the chance to consider art as a possible vocation and career path. The programme won’t be solely for aspiring artists, but also for those looking to gain transferable skills. Every year we will work with approximately 12 Young Associates.

KEY TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

- Finalising the partnership with the accrediting centre;
- Initiating and managing new partnerships;
- Developing and overseeing the curriculum;
- Recruiting and managing the faculty;
- Developing and implementing a recruitment and retention strategy for the Young Associates;
- Overseeing the planning and delivery of the pilot programme;
- Providing the Young Associates with pastoral care;
- Managing the YAP budget;
- Evaluating and reporting on YAP;
- Supporting YAP’s fundraising efforts.

- Engagement with the organisation’s values;
- Experience of working with stakeholders to develop creative initiatives;
- An enhanced children/adult’s barred list DBS certificate registered with the online update service or be willing to process a new application;
