The Role

We are looking to recruit part year Security Officers to join our Security team on fixed term contracts until the end of December 2019. During this period, you will be contracted to work during the University of Kent term times, Freshers week plus the weekend prior to each new term start date and to cover the required annual leave entitlement. During these working weeks, the contracted hours will be full time and you will work on a 24/7 shift rota pattern (4 days on, 4 days off with varying shift pattern lengths). Your salary will be paid in equal instalments over the employment period.

Our Security team provide security support and assistance to a diverse range of students, staff and visitors, in order to maintain a safe and secure environment on the University of Kent's campus. Acting as a front line contact on a daily basis, our Security Officers also play a key role in developing and fostering relationships with our students, staff and visitors to assist in promoting a community feeling on campus.

In this role, you will actively work as part of the wider Security team to deliver a first class service. You will work flexibly within a shift rota system to meet the varied security demands of a large, diverse University campus and population. It is key you understand that situations must be dealt with safely and effectively, which means duties outlined in the Job Description cannot be definitive; situations will often require informed personal judgement calls and may (on occasions) necessitate ongoing attendance after official shift end times.



The Person

To be successful in the role, you will have:
A good general level of education, including Grade C or equivalent in Maths and English;

Knowledge and experience of working in a customer focused environment;

Experience of working as a member of a diverse team;

Proven experience of managing potentially volatile situations and dealing with conflict.

In addition, you will have excellent communication skills as it is essential that you are able to maintain an approachable, helpful and professional customer focused service provision at all times.

You need to be able to deal with situations in a respectful, diplomatic but authoritative manner.

It is important that you can show you are able to appraise situations quickly and effectively, make decisions appropriate to the situation, and work within provided guidelines.

The Department

The Estates Department provides a number of essential services to the University of Kent and is responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of the extensive grounds and buildings; the security of students, staff and visitors; transport and travel; a postal service and the telephone exchange as well as the University Design & Print Centre. It is also responsible for the buildings, new development and construction projects both at Canterbury and at our Medway campus at Chatham Maritime and on the Chatham Historic Dock Yard.
