As Head of Data Protection you will lead the University on all matters relating to information privacy, ensuring that it is embedded in the procedures and culture of the organisation. We need to ensure that people can trust that the University will handle their information as they might reasonably expect and in accordance with the law and regulations.

If you have a proven track record in the leadership, strategic planning and delivery of major compliance projects and have experience of creating and implementing new strategies, policies and procedures, this could be the role for you!

As Head of Data Protection you will:

lead the development and implementation of a university-wide GDPR compliance strategy and framework
review and assess the University's performance on information compliance
devise and implement a suite of training programmes to ensure data compliance
manage a budget to fund projects and prepare cases for funding when required

To succeed in this role you will have:

a Data Protection practitioner qualification or relevant legal qualification or equivalent
significant experience of working in information compliance
a proven record in managing the processing of both Subject Access Requests and Freedom of Information Requests to a high standard
experience of training and presenting to all levels including senior management

This opportunity is offered on a full time, ongoing basis.

The Information Compliance Team consists of the Head of Data Protection and the Information Compliance Officer. The team is part of the Council Secretariat which consists of a further 3 members of staff: the Secretary to Council, the Deputy Secretary to Council and a Secretarial Assistant.

The Council Secretariat’s work is focused on the high level governance of the University and it supports the University’s governing body, Council and its related committees (Audit, Finance and Resources, Redundancy, Staff Policy, Safety, Lay Nominations, Honorary Degrees). It works with the Chairs of Council, Finance and Resources Committee, Audit Committee, the Vice-Chancellor and other members of the Executive Group to ensure good governance of the University and compliance with the University’s Royal Charter, Statutes and Ordinances; regulatory requirements of, for example, the Higher Education Funding Council for England; and legal requirements arising from UK and European legislation and regulations. The University archivist also has a reporting line to the Secretary to Council.
