Background
King’s Rochester Sports Centre was set up 6 years ago as a dual-use facility with King’s Rochester. King’s Rochester is a co-educational, independent school with over 600 pupils between the ages of 3 & 18, including 60 boarders. Rochester is 35 minutes from London on the high speed rail link and enjoys excellent road connections to other parts of the country. The school has a long heritage, having been founded in 604 AD and is part of the Cathedral Foundation
When not being used by the school its facilities are hired out to the local community and schools. It is a division of Roffa Limited, the trading subsidiary company of King’s Rochester. The Sports Centre has been refurbished to a high standard and includes a large indoor sports hall, a newly equipped gym, a Functional Fitness Training Studio, conference suite with bar and catering facilities. It has external facilities including 7 tennis courts, 5 netball courts, and is an approved LTA centre for tennis. The centre also successfully runs children’s holiday club activities during the school holiday periods along with other community events.

Summary of Post
An exciting opportunity has become available for an ambitious, capable and inspiring manager to join our team to continue to drive the Sports Centre forward. We require someone with adaptive and strategic leadership skills whose ‘can do’ attitude will motivate everyone around them. To apply you will have a proven track record in effectively managing teams as well as achieving and surpassing targets.
The Sports Centre Manager will have accountability and overall responsibility for the Sports Centre’s sales and financial performance as well as its safe and efficient operation. The Centre is the main sports facility for King’s Rochester School and the Manager must work very closely with the school Bursar plus the Directors of Sport in both the Preparatory and Senior Schools.


Responsibilities

Sales, marketing and retention
• Prepare and implement annual retention and marketing strategies to maximise the revenue generated by the Sports Centre
• To plan and implement sales and marketing activities to meet company membership targets for growth, retention and profitability
• To ensure that there is a high level of quality control and customer satisfaction at all times
• To lead a focus group meeting on a quarterly basis and introduce ways of accurately receiving member feedback
• Regularly engage with customers and clients understanding their needs and acting on them
• Coordinate all forms of communication with internal and external stakeholders
• Overall responsibility for the development of the Sports Centre website and social media activities

Operations
• To ensure that an effective members’ consultation and complaint handling process is maintained at all times
• Overall responsibility for the purchasing of all equipment and supplies for the Centre ensuring that proper procedures are in place for their safe keeping and control
• To take overall responsibility for the security of the premises and be available for call out as necessary
• To act as Duty Manager as required covering shifts within the 7 day operation

Relationship with King’s Rochester
• Have a clear understanding of the ethos and objectives of King’s Rochester and work with the Principal and Bursar.
• The preparation and implementation of programmes for the use of the Sports Centre facilities taking into consideration the requirements of the School and pupils in consultation with the games departments during term time
• Liaison with the School’s Operations Manager and outside contractors to ensure an effective programme of planned and emergency maintenance

Personnel and management of staff
• To manage and develop a team of approximately 15 staff according to company policies and employment laws and ensure relevant HR procedures are followed at all times
• To be responsible for the delegated induction and training of all staff in operational procedures, codes of practice, health and safety, customer care and the maintenance of training records as required
• Coordinate the staff wages process on a monthly basis in consultation with the payroll administrator
• To be responsible for the administration of staff and freelance instructor files, contracts, training records and personnel information
• Review and record all staff performances quarterly in conjunction with the development of an annual comprehensive staff training programme
• Maintain a positive team atmosphere and motivate staff accordingly

Control
• The preparation, management and control of annual Sports Centre budgets
• To work closely with the Bursary to control the appropriate administration systems for all suppliers and services
• To set monthly KPIs and ensure that staff are working towards them at all times
• To accept delegated responsibility for all licences applicable to the normal operation of the Centre and to ensure that all such licences are adhered to and maintained as required
• To ensure that policies and procedures are maintained and comply with Ofsted guidelines when running school holiday clubs alongside football and tennis camps.
• To ensure that policies and procedures are maintained to comply with Environmental Health guidelines
• Responsible, in conjunction with the Bursar, for the contractual agreements for internal and external partners and services

Health and safety and technical capabilities
• Accept delegated responsibility in consultation with King’s Rochester’s Health and Safety Officer for all areas of health and safety under the provision of the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974
• To maintain and implement the Normal Operating Procedure (NOP), Emergency Action Plan (EAP), Fire Action Plan (FAP) and Risk Assessment (RA) in accordance with the Company Health & Safety Policy and review them annually
• The management of external contractors working within the Centre, in particular ensuring that all legal requirements and safe working practices are adopted by the contractor

Event and activity planning
• preparation and implementation of retention and marketing strategies to maximise the revenue generated by the Sports Centre
• Create an annual calendar of member, charity and staff events
• Develop new facility, event and activity proposals
• Lead team meetings to stimulate innovation or positive changes and developments for the Centre
• Keep up to date with all the latest developments within the health and fitness industry

Additional Duties
• Any other duties as may be reasonably required for the effective and safe management of the facility.
• To maintain positive relationships with outside organisations and liaise, negotiate and consult with a range of stakeholders and clients to achieve business outcomes


Person Specification

Mandatory Qualifications/Requirements
• A relevant degree in sport, leisure, health and fitness or recreation management
• A clean report from the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) and other mandatory requirements
• A Level 2 Fitness Instructor qualification and First Aid at Work certificate, or equivalents
• Business acumen, strategic thinking and problem solving
• A customer focused, approachable and outgoing personality

Experience/Knowledge
• Have at least 3 year’s managerial experience within a educational/commercial leisure role with responsibility for managing a large team of staff (mandatory).
• Experience of the preparation and implementation of retention and marketing strategies to maximise the revenue generated by the Sports Centre
• Technical knowledge of products and systems within a sports centre environment relating to plant, health and safety, fitness equipment and membership databases
• Experience of managing events to include food and beverage provision and preparation

Skills and Abilities
• Highly developed communication and interpersonal skills including the ability to write board papers, manage staff and develop teams
• Production and effective management of annual budgets
• Excellent leadership and communication (both written and oral) skills with the ability to build and motivate a team of staff
• Well-developed administrative, marketing and sales skills
• Ability to work flexible hours when required including weekends and public holidays

Hours of Work
This is a full time position.

Circa. £32,000 per annum
