Finance Officer
• Salary: up to £30,000 depending on experience
• Flexitime 37.5 hrs per week, 25 days holiday plus Bank Holidays
• Pension scheme with 6% employer’s contribution
• Training support package available by negotiation

Canterbury Archaeological Trust is a registered charity with a £2.1m turnover, employing 60 professional archaeologists and specialists. It conducts field investigations throughout SE England and desk-based scientific assessment, analysis and reporting.

Due to staff changes and reorganisation, we are seeking to recruit a Finance Officer to take over running our accounts department. Candidates will be at least CCAB part-qualified. They will have a good command of all relevant professional practices and legal requirements, and ideally those relating to charities. They will also be capable of providing easily understood professional financial and related advice and support to the senior executives, managers and the Board of Trustees. They will have worked at appropriate levels in comparable finance departments for at least five years, be commercially-minded, diligent, have patience, work well in a team and if they also enjoy archaeology, so much the better!

The successful candidate will be expected to demonstrate that they can execute the following responsibilities to an appropriate standard:

Key responsibility and duties:
• Oversee day-to-day finance operations, line-managing a team of two
• Become proficient in the use of Greentree, the Trust’s integrated ERP and accounting software
• Prepare monthly management accounts, including running a Revenue Recognition process
• Provide financial and other data to assist in evaluating operational effectiveness
• Work with the Trust's Management in setting and reviewing annual budgets
• Plan and monitor expenditure within the agreed annual budgets in line with strategic aims
• Control of the Debtors Ledger including credit control and liaising with debt recovery agencies
• Oversee Creditor payments, including Direct Debits, credit cards and online banking
• Oversee and assist with the raising of job-cost sales invoices
• Monitor payroll procedures including year-end returns and PAYE requirements
• Oversee and support production of the quarterly VAT Return
• Prepare annual accounts, audit preparation and liaise with the Trust’s auditors
• Ensure compliance with Charity Commissioners and Companies House reporting requirements
• Control of fixed assets register and depreciation
• Prepare and post prepayments and accruals
• Undertake weekly bank reconciliations
• Undertake reconciliation of various nominal/general ledger accounts
