Main Purpose of Job

To ensure that all areas of a high dependency, quality Nursing Home are clean, tidy and presentable at all times. To ensure that clean, well presented and well maintained supply of clothing for all residents and linen for the Home are available at all times.


Key Responsibilities

• Operate vacuum cleaners, floor polishers, carpet shampooers etc safely. Maintain and store equipment properly. Report any defects immediately.
• Sweep, scrub, wax and polish floors as appropriate. Clean rugs, carpets, upholstered furniture and curtains. Dust and polish furniture and equipment.
• Apply cleaning substances in accordance with instructions, taking all necessary safety precautions. Ensure adequate stocks are available.
• Wash woodwork, windows, door panels and sills. Clean toilets, baths, sinks and hand basins as per cleaning schedule.
• Empty waste bins and transport rubbish and waste to disposal area.
• Keep utility and storage rooms in clean and orderly condition.
• Laundry duties-
• Handle all incoming items to the laundry, sort for different treatments in accordance with GAH policies and procedures.
• Wash, dry and iron all residents clothing in accordance with instruction labels.
• Keep records of any damage to items whilst in the laundry.
• Ensure that all machines and equipment are in good working order, report defects and immediately withdraw from service any faulty equipment.
• Where CPD or other in house training is offered or provided, employees have a responsibility to attend and take advantage of this in order to ensure they maintain and develop professional competence. Where required, staff must keep records of such CPD for the purpose of continued registration to practice.

Skills Required

Essential
• Basic numeracy & literacy skills
• Demonstrates a basic understanding of the needs of the patient and the role of the Housekeeping Assistant.
• Proven customer care / carer experience
• Must be over 18
• The job is a physical one and often requires manual handling, so a good level of fitness is required

Desirable

• Experience of domestic and laundry work or able to demonstrate knowledge of what domestics do, ideally in a residential/nursing home or sheltered housing environment.
• Knowledge of Health and Safety in the workplace
