Job Overview:

Our client's existing IT systems have been a major factor in the success and growth of the business and are very highly regarded both by their team and the wider industry. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to build upon this platform and will be able to deliver software that will genuinely have a substantial impact on all aspects of the business.

We are seeking a strong, logical software developer, able to write clear, concise, well-structured and easily maintainable code, who will adhere to a set of common coding standards and practices.

The successful individual will be able to quickly understand both the needs of the business and those of individual users and translate these requirements into user-friendly and easy-to-use software, which will significantly improve the productivity of both individual users and the overall efficiency of the business.

Primary duties:

Development of all aspects of the existing line-of-business database system, currently based upon a range of Microsoft technologies, including MS SQL Server, VBA and MS Access 2013.

Duties will include programming of new functionality to meet ever-evolving business needs, enhancing and bug-fixing existing code, development of business reports/management information and the production of technical documentation.

The following would additionally be advantageous:

Java, Python or C#

Web development skills, especially WordPress and JavaScript

Note that it is presently the intention to migrate the line-of-business system, from the existing legacy front-end, to a far more modern and resilient code base. You will be fully involved in the choice of both language and frameworks for this migration.

Secondary duties:

All small business IT functions, including server and network administration (physical and virtual servers), liaising with external IT suppliers, user support/training, hardware/software installation and IT security.

Qualifications and experience:

A strong preference for qualification to Honours degree level (ideally from a BCS-accredited course) in a relevant subject such as Computer Science or Software Engineering, whilst any commercial programming or general IT experience would also be advantageous.

Candidates with differing qualification and experience levels (e.g. A recent A level student or a candidate with a number of years of commercial experience) may also be considered.

Personal profile:

Good interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to clearly communicate to non-technical colleagues at all levels within the organisation, as well as with customers and other outside parties

Strong attention to detail, whilst also able to quickly develop a full understanding of the overall systems/processes

Quality-oriented, yet demonstrating a flexible, pragmatic and proportionate attitude

Good organisational and planning skills, with the ability to prioritise workloads and successfully deliver to agreed timescales

Team player, with a strong sense of customer service

Self-motivated, with a strong work ethic and a ‘can do’ attitude

Package:

Competitive starting salary, depending upon skills, qualifications and relevant experience

25 days paid holiday per annum, plus all usual Bank Holidays
