As the world’s leading security solutions group with operations in over 120 countries and more than 625,000 employees worldwide, G4S is a truly unique company. We’re bigger, more diverse and involved in more fascinating, cutting-edge projects than many people would imagine and we now have an opportunity for Secure Care Officers to join our team at Medway Secure Training Centre (STC) near Rochester.

At our STCs, teams of committed people look after young people aged 12 to 17 years who have been remanded or sentenced to periods of detention. We work closely with the Home Office, Youth Justice Board for England and Wales and the Ministry of Justice to ensure that our approach to regimes and designs reflect best practice in residential care to prevent re-offending.

The policies and aims of our STCs are derived from the principles of child care best practice and reflect the ‘Every Child Matters’ agenda. The aim is to create a living environment that helps address the cycle of offending behaviour and one that is consistent with the needs of developing the boys and girls in our care.

Located in Rochester, Kent, Medway opened in April 1998 and was originally designed to accommodate 40 young males. The centre expanded in 2002 to accommodate a total of 76 young people, both boys and girls.

As a member of our team of Secure Care Officers, you’ll be involved in every aspect of the daily life of the young people at the centre, maintaining a safe and secure environment at all times. Working directly with the young people every day, you’ll motivate them to improve domestic and social skills as well as supporting them in the classroom, delivering offending behaviour programmes and supervising leisure activities. This is a diverse role, but not easy, as some of the young people can be unpredictable and confrontational at times. You’ll need to be confident, assertive and resilient with plenty of life experience and a firm but fair approach in order to build a successful career in this rewarding but challenging environment. Your responsibilities will include:

• Advising, caring for and providing a stable environment for the young people. Demonstrating to the young people the value of education coupled with the ability to develop skills and change their behaviour, whilst encouraging them not to re-offend when released.
• Building mutual trust and respect with the young people so that they respond appropriately to information and guidance.
• Defining structures and boundaries for the young people so that they understand the behaviour expected of them.
• Monitoring the behaviour of the young people to avoid incidents and improve standards of behaviour.

The Ideal Candidate

• Confident, assertive and resilient team player
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
• Plenty of life experience and common sense
• A firm but fair approach
• A non-judgmental attitude
• An eye for detail
• The ability to motivate others and inspire them to achieve their full potential

Shortlisted candidates will be required to attend an assessment. These candidates will be notified of the details via email.

Please note that these vacancies are subject to a 10 year checkable history and the strict vetting standards set by G4S and the Secretary of State for the Home Office and are exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act.

You must be eligible to work in the UK and must have been resident in the UK for a minimum period of 3 years. You will also need to provide full details of your employment and education history for the last 10 years as part of the security screening process for this role.

Here at G4S we are an equal opportunities employer.
