The newly created post of Hospitality and Commercial Services Manager, Medway, will have oversight of all Kent Hospitality catering outlets and conferencing activity during term time and vacation periods and the accommodation contract with Liberty Living for 1,100 study bedrooms at Medway. It will involve a strategic and operational input into both current and planned services and the identification and development of exceptional new services.

The Hospitality and Commercial Manager will support the respective heads of Sport, Physical Activity and Recreation and the Gulbenkian Arts Centre to ensure implementation of a comprehensive, integrated range of services addressed to the practical needs and aspirations of our staff and students.

This is a senior management role which is expected to make a significant contribution to the shaping of the future of Commercial Services activity in Medway.

Key Accountabilities / Primary Responsibilities

• To lead in managing and developing the University’s commercial services portfolio in Medway, including new and existing services.

• To ensure appropriate, effective and ethical marketing of the Directorate’s services to all customers, working closely with Senior Management colleagues at Canterbury, monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of all marketing activity

• To efficiently manage financial and physical resources, whilst effectively managing risk, including the setting of income and expenditure budgets for all areas of operation. The budgeted income for No 1 Bistro and Block T Outlet, Pier Road is some £600k. In addition, the catering outlet at Bridge Wardens’ College, summer vacation income derived from accommodation at Liberty Quays, and joint catering with University of Greenwich, Pilkington and Archibald Hay Mess contribute a further £600k.

Key Duties

The post-holder will be expected to work closely with the leads of other Professional Service departments at Medway. Similarly, to work proactively with customers to continually meet and exceed expectations, and keep up to date with market trends.

• To develop effective working relationships with other service providers across Medway – in particular the University of Greenwich, Canterbury Christ Church University and GK union.

• To actively manage and foster relationships with third party commercial partners, specifically Liberty Living, Chatham Historic Dockyard Trust and Visit Medway ensuring these are always in the best interests of the University.

• Deliver high level verbal and written presentations on the University facilities and services (to include UCAS and Open Days) to a wide range of internal and external stakeholders including prospective students and parents and “key decision makers” responsible for placing significant business with the University

• Take a leading role in assisting the local authority (Visit Medway) with any “destination bids” they are planning for major cultural and sporting events that will make substantial use of the University facilities and services

• To ensure adherence to statutory requirements including health and safety, food safety regulations and licensing laws and University policies and procedures.

• Ensure that risk assessments are in place and kept updated for all operating areas at Medway, including outdoor catering events. Staff in your area of responsibility will be required to comply with ppe (protective personal equipment) regulations and transfer stock and equipment between outlets.

• Bring to the attention of the relevant people any matters relating to the health and safety of staff, students and visitors.

• To work effectively with other members of senior management to promote and achieve the targets agreed for Commercial Services in Medway.

• Promote and uphold the University’s values though personal example and working practices

• Promote equality, diversity and inclusivity for all staff and sustain an inclusive and supportive study and work environment in accordance with University policy.

• To undertake other such duties, commensurate with the grading of the post which may be assigned by the Director of Commercial Services or their nominee.
